What counts as "family" in Georgia?

"Relative” is defined as a person who is related by blood or legal adoption within the third degree of consanguinity or by marriage. Third degree of consanguinity means mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, sister, brother, daughter, son, granddaughter, grandson, aunt, uncle, great aunt, great uncle, niece, nephew, grand-niece, grand-nephew, 1st cousins, 1st cousins, once removed, and 2nd cousins.

Can I get paid for taking care of my spouse?

Structured Family Caregiver: No

Family Hire: No

What if we're not really related?

SFC: The Medicaid member and primary caregiver must be related biologically or by marriage. 

Family Hire: Non-related, live-in caregivers are not allowed for SOURCE & CCSP.

What if I live next door to my relative?

SFC Family caregivers must live in the same home as the care recipient.

Can I be self-employed?

Structured Family Caregiver: No

Family Hire: Yes

Are caregivers' assets or income checked or limited?

Structured Family Caregiver: No, but caregivers are not eligible if they have a job or are self employed. 

Family Hire: No.

Can I work from home for another job?

Structured Family Caregiver: No

Family Hire: Yes

Are SFC participants considered employees?

No. Caring Hands United acts as a training and support coach and facilitates stipend payments. 

Would I get paid hourly?

Structured Family Caregiver:  Daily stipend paid every 2 weeks

Family Hire: Paid hourly every 2 weeks

Work / Duties

Do I have to clock in and out?

Structured Family Caregiver: No

Family Hire: Yes

Who sets my work schedule?

Structured Family Caregiver: SFC caregivers set their own schedules.

Family Hire: FH caregivers' schedules are set by Caring Hands United staff.

What if I have criminal convictions on my background check?

It depends. There is a 10 Year Exemption for past crimes, but there are also some crimes that are forever disqualifying. View information on criminal background checks here
